CFHS Teacher Earns Recognition as State Finalist

Camden Fairview High School (CFHS) teacher Chris Coker is one of four Arkansas science teachers selected as 2023 state finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). According to the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE), the National Science Foundation oversees the award program that “recognizes outstanding teachers who have demonstrated a commitment to professional development, innovative teaching techniques, and technology use in their classrooms.”

State finalists are selected annually by a national committee of scientists, mathematicians, and educators. “We are so excited for Coach Coker. He is truly deserving of this honor. Congratulations are in order for all of his accomplishments and for the many more to come”, said CFHS Principal Cara Bowie. Coach Coker has taught at Camden Fairview for almost 25 years, and he currently serves as the CFHS Science Department Chair while teaching AP Chemistry, AP Physics, Pre-AP Physics, and Introduction to Education. Camden Fairview Superintendent Johnny Embry said, “Congratulations to Coach Coker! He represents exactly the kind of educator every student deserves. Coach Coker understands that a quality education is built not just on the latest technology and instructional materials but on the relationships educators forge with their students and each other. He knows this is the key to unlocking opportunities for every student.”

Each state finalist is eligible to be considered for recognition by the PAEMST national committee as a national awardee. According to ADE, national awardees “receive a $10,000 award, a presidential citation, and a trip to Washington D.C. for a series of recognition events, professional development activities, and an awards ceremony.” Read ADE's full press release and see other state finalists here.
