Happy Juneteenth! From the National Museum of African American History and Culture: on this day in 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to share the news that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free - two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

June 19th came to be known as Juneteenth, and it’s now officially a federal holiday. Learn more at
